The B-24D-80-CO Liberator "José Carioca" was a heavy bomber assigned to the 409th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group, of the 8th Air Force, operating from RAF Hardwick in England during the pivotal year of 1943. This aircraft met its end on the most daring and costly mission of the USAAF, Operation Tidal Wave, a low-level strike against Romanian oil refineries on August 1, 1943. Hit by flak near the target, the bomber dropped its payload while engulfed in flames before crashing into the Ploiesti Women’s Prison. All ten crewmen were lost, and many prisoners perished. "José Carioca" represented the lethal precision and relentless daylight bombing campaign that the 8th Air Force waged against Nazi Germany from its English bases.
