Considered obsolete by December 7th, 1941, in the absence of a suitable replacement, the Douglas SBD Dauntless became the backbone of the Pacific air war. At the Battle of Midway, June 4th 1942, Admiral Nagumo's 1st Carrier Force, comprising of the carriers Kaga, Sōryū, Akagi, and Hiryū, was all sent to the bottom of the sea by the crews of the Douglas SBD Dauntless. The Japanese Imperial Navy suffered its first defeat in over 300 years. After the Battle of Midway, Japan was never to regain its strategic momentum.
